Conference 2014

Evidence Based Medicine and Social Investigation Conference

August 22-23,  2014, Vancouver, British Columbia

With many regrets, we are forced to postpone the 2014 conference. We hope to stabilize our financial situation in time to organize a conference for 2015.

We are pleased to announce our fourth annual E.B.M.S.I. conference, designed for both families falsely accused of child abuse and professionals and paraprofessionals who work with child abuse cases. The faculty includes physicians and attorneys, expert witnesses and advocates, and social service professionals. These experts come ready to work with and learn from each other and the attendees.

The conference curriculum covers the fundamentals of evidence-based medicine and its role in improving how investigators and decision makers handle suspected abuse cases. Topics include:

  • The evolving child abuse medical literature
  • Medical mimics of abuse
  • Defending against abuse allegations in both family and criminal court
  • The standards and guidelines for child protection investigations and process

  1. i am very interested in attending this conference. i hope there is a good turn out of people in attendance.

  2. I am very interested in this subject of SBS. Please keep me informed of any updates.

  3. I am very interested in attending this conference. We are parents currently being acused of SBS and this conference is very relevant in our lives at the moment. We are from South Africa and will be making arrangements to either attend the conference or video conference into this conference.
    Regards Anelise

    • Thank you Anelise for your interest. I am very sorry to hear that your lives have been effected with allegations of shaken baby syndrome, but am positive that this conference will be able to assist you and your lawyer with this. I have received your email and questions regarding the conference and will be contacting you shortly.

  4. I am so happy to have found this organization. I am currently being wrongly accused of shaken baby syndrome and my life has been in termile ever since. I had my baby taken by child protection when she was 5 months old and I am devasated that I am missing out on her growing up and that the bond has been broken between us, when all I did was bring my sick child to the hospital. She is now almost 9 months old without any signs of damage, and I have another 4 months to wait till my next court date. Currently, I am only allowed to see her 12 hours a week, which has been nothing but cruelty to say the least. I hope that someone can help me get my daughter back. My heart goes out to all the people being wrongly accused of child abuse.

    • I am so very sorry to read of your situation and want to express my sympathy to you and your family. I also have another webpage here:

You can find various medical papers on shaken baby syndrome there that may be helpful to you. Also if you are needing assistance with connecting with a medical expert that could review your case and/or need legal assistance please feel free to contact me personally at and I would be happy to help you. Again my heart goes out to you and if I can be of any assistance please feel free to contact me.

    • I can’t even begin to express my gratefulness for this organization. I too am in the same situation. My husband and I are being accused of SBS. Our daughters were both taken from our home. I am amazed at how much information is available on this subject and yet the medical community in general won’t accept. Some of it seems like common sense! I feel that parents in this situation should unite and raise awareness. It seems as though this happens very rarely, but I think parents are being falsely accused more often than not. I would like to get in contact with you Shirlene and Anelise. Perhaps we can help each other with what we’ve learned as we go through this terrible ordeal. Or at least you can know that you are not the only one and there are people out there that believe you and support you. I can be reached at

  5. The lineup of speaker is quite remarkable. I really look forward to attending this groundbreaking conference.

  6. This was an amazing event and I would have to say a smashing success! I am stunned at what you were able to bring about. Thank you so much! I look forward to 2012’s event.

  7. I am attending this conference. We called 911 when our baby started gasping for breath. The hospital found a subdural hematoma on the CT scan and Social “Services” took our baby away. The court just told us after 8 months of struggle that they think we are GUILTY of shaking our baby. It is absolutely NOT TRUE! They are wrong! The prejudice in the court was obvious from the behavior of the judge and prosecution when our expert witnesses were testifying. We still don’t have our baby back! This is harder to endure than we ever imagined. Somehow we have to make the world hear us!

    • Hello Lynda. I am so sorry to read of the trial you are experiencing with this! Unfortunately you are not alone – every day parents and caregivers are alleged to have shaken their babies and will spend months and even years battling for the truth to be discovered. I am glad to hear you are planning on taking advantage of this opportunity. You will be joining other parents and experts in a very supportive environment and also have the opportunity to speak one on one with any or all of the medical and legal experts presenting regarding your situation. I look forward to meeting you and assisting you whatever way I can as our goal is to connect you with the experts and information you need and provide you with the needed support through your ordeal.

    • Lynda,
You’re not alone. We’re currently helping a couple who have been accused of “shaking” their beloved daughter to death. They’ve been detained for many years.Since early on, the couple steadfastly maintained their innocense . One of them has many family members ( outside of America) who died early(3 of them at 2-3 months) and some with fractures at very young age. Lately, at the couple’s repeated requests, DNA tests were done on the father and the tissue of deceased baby. Mutated genes causing some kind of genetic disease has been found. More and more evidences are now pointing to the fact that SBS is out of the question in this case. However, the prosecutors will not let them go. The poor parents are financially inadequate and can’t afford pricey private law practitioners. They still refused plead bargains from the prosecutors though they yearn breathing free air because they know they never ever hurt their baby. This is a tragedic story happening to social underdogs who have no resouces to fight for their innocense. It’s a shame to the system which allows the judicial system to indulge in their comfort zone of embracing false science that reigns supreme in so called SBS cases.
Don’t give up Lynda, we have to believe that no matter how long it takes, justice will prevail one day if not now. ” If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” Yes, our voices will be heard!

  8. I’ve read on the Vitamin D Council website (.org) about false accusations of shaken baby syndrome, which was actually rickets, caused by a Vitamin D deficiency. The information on their website might help someone who has been falsely accused.

  9. I was accused of SBS but in June 2012 was aquitted. It took 6 months until they had come and said i was going to be charged in the babies murder. THis all started in January of 2011 and in June of 2012 i am now trying to go on with my life. This was a very traumatic event for me and my family and for the family who lost their baby. I was babysitting her at the time, and this has forever changed my life. Never would i ever think i would be accused of something like this. I’m glad the jury listened to all evidence. I was so fortunate to have Dr. John Plunkett testify in my case. I have learned so much from all of this. I wish it would have been taped so all could here how this case was handled, from the EMT, Dr, parents, investigators, state attorney, county attorney, witnesses…because if everyone could here it all like we did you would be surprised how things were stated and handled. My wish is that the Dr. would be more aware of just rushing to accuse but look and do more tests on the child first. I wish i could afford to come to this conference but my bills from the lawyer and Dr. testimonies in my case make it impossible at this time. I am very willing to talk to others who have been through this. Being accused of something you knew you never did is the hardest thing i’ve ever had to go through in my life. I now am trying to learn how to grieve and move on with my own life. Glad i found this site! Have a great conference, wish i could join you!

    • Hello Salli. I am terribly sorry your family has experienced this injustice, but glad to hear you were acquitted. Dr. John Plunektt is an incredible medical expert and has contributed extensively to this ongoing controversy between medical experts. Regarding the conference we have just made available another option for attendance and this is Live Streaming. You would need to register for the conference and forward it to us and then we would send you the password for the live stream. It will save on traveling costs as well as room and board. If this is an option for you please let me know and we can make arrangements for you to join us. all the best to you and your family.

    • Our beloved nephew has accepted a plea bargain and will spend 7-10 years in prison, even though he is innocent. He could not face the risk of 30 years if he lost at trial. One of the ways that I can continue to fight is to work with The Medill Innocence at Northwestern University. Would you p[lease share your case with them? Please email <> You can tell her that Gail Canizares suggested that you contact them. The project will use investigative journalize to compare cases and their outcomes. It will not help my nephew in the short run, but someday we may keep others from being accused.

      • I am certaily excited to hear of this project and would encourage others to share their stories. It is tragic that so many have felt they needed to take a plea bargain knowing that they were innocent of the alledged crime. May God use efforts such as these to change the injustices occuring in these cases.

      • My grandson also took a plea bargain, involintary manslaughter, 20 years to serve 12. He was charged along with his girlfiend who got off as soon as he took the plea. He expressed his innocence right up til rehearsing his plea infront of the defense attorney and the prosecution before going before the judge. “This is what the judge is going to ask you”, are you guilty or not guilty of the crime your accused of?” At this rehearsal he said “not guilty”, the attorneys said no, no you say guilty. I walked out of the conference room at this point and saw it was a done deal between the two attorneys. Just two days before I had met with my grandson and his attorney at which time he assured me he could win this case. I have such disregard for our legal system.
I too hope to come to the conference.

      • Hello Jackie. I’m so sorry to hear about your grandson. The justice system is deeply flawed. We would love to see you at our conference and hear more about your grandson’s story. Best to you and your family.

  10. Reading these stories just makes me cry! My desire is to pull all these stories into one place, coordinate them, make a documentary about them and write a book about them. I am coming to the conference.

  11. Was wondering who can I email? I just did a psych assessment and after that 20 Minutes of him telling me what ministry said has me diagnosed with a list of things

  12. I am unable to attend the conference due to living in the UK but my partner and I are currently being accused of shaking our son and are trying our hardest to find another explanation for his subdural bleed and retinal bleeding. He had a failed Ventouse/Kiwi attempt at his delivery and was then delivered using forceps. His eyes and forehead were extremely bruised and swollen and the 5 weeks later he was admitted to hospital with left sided focal seizures and was subsequently disgnosed with meningitis and subdural & retinal bleeds. Aparently because our history of events doesn’t indicate an event when these ‘injuries’ could of occured it has been deemed that we have shaken him and he has been placed with my mother and we are only allowed to see him with 100% supervision.

I would very much like to know the outcomes of this conference and anything that could help prove we haven’t harmed our son. Could anyone help us by providing minutes of significant finding or papers?

    Thank you in advance

    • A thousand apologies for our delayed reply. (We’re an all-volunteer organization, and we were totally distracted by hosting and following up details from the conference—oops, no one was checking the web site.)

Meningitis? Seriously? That is one of the well-known legitimate medical causes of subdural hematoma.

There is an active parent-support group in the UK called the Five Percenters, at

You can order DVDs of the conference from $100 Canadian within Canada; $120 if shipped to the U.S. I don’t know what he’ll say about Britain.

      Many good wishes.

  13. Hi, you all make me cry all over again, i know now i’m not alone, doesn’t necessary makes me feel better, just more scared. But even more aware of this huge problem especially in S.A.
Myself and my husband has been accused of abuse and murder of our 3 and a half week old baby boy. Not just the lost of a child, but how this has ripped our marriage apart, i got out on bail, and he is still in jail, going on 18 months, family and friends have turned agents us, been in the news paper 8 times and on the news, lost everything. No one wants to help, and money there is none, The state is quit sure of there case and doesn’t even want to go in the blood disorder decease or brittle bone decease. I’m giving up slowly. If there is any one that can help in any way, please, this is my last resort. Our boy stopped breathing at home @ one in the morning, i tried CPR, went to the hospital, 9 hours later he passed with bleeding on the brain, skull fractures and broken rips. as i said my goodbyes, myself and my husband was locked up at the hospital. But they could have saved him, i’m possitive, but they were more worried to accuse us of abuse. his blood stoled, his heart beat skipped beats, and he couldn’t breath by himself. they didn’t do a cat scan till after 5 hours that i begged, cause i didn’t have a medical aid, they also didn’t try to release the pressure of his brain. All hope has been lost and my faith is taking strain.

  14. Yes. They aee saying that the bleeds do not match the “pattern” for meningitis and that they do not feel his case of meningitis was serious enough to have caused it, bearing in mind that they performed his lumbar puncture almost a week aftrr starting him on 3 different antibiotics including acyclovir and amoxycillin and the tests came back as equal for both viral and bacterial so they cannot even give me a definitive answer as to which type it was!

Ok Thank you very much for your reply.

    • These people make me nuts. So many of the babies diagnosed as shaken have had complex health histories. You’d think that a sample positive for both viral and bacterial agents, after a week of antibiotics, would count as an unusual case of meningitis, wouldn’t you?

Best wishes with the 5 percenters.

  15. Dear Zabeth,
Thank you for your role in educating the public on this conflict and for providing resources for those in need. You have some incredible connections, some of whom are even helping us in our efforts to free our loved one. You turned your personal nightmare into an opportunity to help others. Thank you for paying it forward. Upon Brian’s return home, we will do the same.
    Please read our story at

    • Thanks so much. Perhaps when this is over for your family you might consider sharing your story at one of the conferences. We try to include personal testimony at each one and would be delighted to have you share. We will keep your family in our prayers.

  16. We would be honored to attend one of your conferences and share our story. Having an opportunity to help others is very gratifying. Despite everything, we have much to be grateful for and we count our blessings each and every night.
